Tilting the painting downward shows how the cut-out pieces have been layered over one another. Notice they are not glued flat, which adds to the interest of the landscape.
This beautiful painting of rolling textured hills was painted by Barbara Donivan during her watercolor experimentations.
STEPS TO CREATE YOUR LAYERED PAINTING: 1. Paint textures on your watercolor paper. Use different colors, variations, and brushstrokes for each separate layer. 2. Cut out shapes that you want in your finished project. 3. Using watercolor paper or cardboard for your backing, move shapes around until you find the design you like. Overlap the shapes. 4. Glue shapes to backing, leaving some sides open for special dimensional effect.
